Our adoption processโ€ฆ

Firstly, THANK YOU. Thank you for considering a rescue animal as your new member of the family. If everyone chose to adopt their pets, it would make such a difference to the overfilled pounds and shelters that Sydney and surrounds are experiencing.

All our current rescue animals are able to be viewed at:

How it works

While every rescue organisation has a different adoption process, at SAS, we have developed our method through years of experience, and with a focus on ensuring every adoption meets the best needs of both the animal and their new home:

Enquiry:

Firstly, you make contact with us via our adoption form, providing us with some information about the animal you are interested in and your current home/lifestyle/pet situation. Your enquiry is forwarded to the relevant foster carer, who will make contact with you for a chat.

Meet & Greet:

A meet and greet (M&G) will then be arranged and the foster carer will let you know if the animal will be available for immediate adoption at the M&G or if other medical procedures are required before they are able to be re-homed. If immediate adoption is likely, we will arrange a representative to come to your place for a โ€œhome-checkโ€. This step is simply to ensure our rescues are going to a safe and secure new home. For all animals, we just do a quick visual of the common areas in your house, additionally for dogs, we perform a perimeter check of the backyard fence - we are very experienced at spotting potential escape points. Even after a home-check, you are not committed to the adoption and are still welcome to go away after the M&G for further consideration. Please note, if the M&G is for a dog, we recommend you bring your current dog/s, so that you can see how they interact in a neutral space.

Trial period:

Once you decide that you are still interested in adoption, SAS offer a two week trial period. At this point we ask you to sign a trial agreement, complete a transfer of ownership form (in preparation for the completion of the trial) and pay the adoption fee, which is fully refundable should the trial and adoption be called off. During the trial period the foster carer and other experts are available to help with any โ€œteething issuesโ€ while integrating your new pet into the household.

Final adoption:

At any stage during the trial period you can call an end to it and formalise the adoption. At this stage, we will submit the change of ownership papers, transferring your details onto your new petโ€™s microchip registration. All their paperwork is forwarded to you and their medical history can be forwarded to a veterinarian of your choice. Of course, we are still available for ongoing advise, and even more so for UPDATES.
